Etymology for རེབ་གོང་།:

རེབ་སའི་གོང་རོལ་ན་ཡོད་པས་རེབ་གོང་ཟེར་ཞེས་ཀུན་ལ་གྲགས་པ་དང་། རེ་སྐོང་དང་རེབ་ཀོང་གི་འབྲི་ཚུལ་ཡང་ཡོད། ཏུན་ཧོང་གཏེར་ཡིག་ན་རེབ་གོང་མདོ་བཞེར་ཞེས་མིང་དངོས་སུ་བྱུང་ཡོད་པས་རེབ་གོང་ཉིད་མིང་ཡང་དག་ཡིན་པར་འདོད།

རེབ་ is a contraction of རེབ་ས་, a village in Repgong; གོང་ means "above" or "upper"; thus རེབ་གོང་ means above རེབ་ས་ village. Repgong is so called because it is located above Repsa. The name spelling རེབ་གོང་མདོ་བཞེར is attested in Dunhuang documents and thus the name རེབ་གོང་ is considered to be most correct. However, there are also the alternate spellings རེ་སྐོང་ and རེབ་ཀོང་.
